"Valley Girls" and Student Midwives PDF Print E-mail
Written by Beth Overton, CPM
It’s been a while since I last blogged. It’s tempting to try and catch up in this blog entry on everything that has happened, but that would take too long to explain. So, as Inigo Montoya said to Westley in The Princess Bride, “Let me ‘splain…No, there is too much. Let me sum up.”

“Valley Girls”
Mercy and I have delivered several babies already for our “valley girls,” and we’re waiting on two more. Early on, some of these valley clients came to Corpus for their prenatal visits in my office. However, for the past couple of months, we’ve been doing weekly visits down in Edinburg and Weslaco. As long as I have more than one client at a time in the valley, it works out fine for me to drive down and do all the prenatal visits in my client’s homes. My clients love it because they get prenatal care right in their own homes, and I really do enjoy going to the valley and providing this service. It does take me a lot more time than seeing my clients in Corpus, but I don’t mind. I usually have company on my trips. My apprentice Mercy comes with me. And a couple of times my husband has come along for the ride when Mercy couldn’t make it.

Local Clients
Most of my clients are still from the Greater Corpus Christi area and these clients see me in my Corpus Christi office. The timing has worked out perfectly so far, and I have been able to care for all my clients without any problem. If anyone locally were to go in labor while I was doing prenatals in the valley, I would come right back to be with whoever is in labor. If I’m doing a birth in the Valley, Jessica is available for my local clients. So far, the timing of all births has worked out perfectly and we haven’t been needed two places at once. But we do have that covered if it ever does happen.

Student Midwives
My apprentice Mercy has completed her training and is now studying to take the North American Registry of Midwives (NARM) exam. So, I am looking for a new apprentice. But some exciting news is that I have recently had four women speak to me about their desires to become midwives. None of them are sure of the timing of when they will pursue their goals, but they do desire to become midwives. I am hoping to find a new student in the near future.

Also, another student midwife recently moved to the area. She lives in Beeville. I met this student a few years back when she first began her studies. But she has also finished her training and plans to take the NARM exam this month along with Mercy. It sure is exciting to see midwifery growing in South Texas. Jessica and I are getting together for lunch today with some of these women. We hope to work towards networking our area midwives and students.

Well, today is another prenatal day and my writing time is limited. So, I’m going to forward this to my “editor” (a.k.a. my husband, Larry) so that this blog entry can be posted later today.
