As a midwife, I often get repeat clients. I also get referrals because clients will speak well of me to their friends and family. But sometimes, if the client isn’t ready to announce her good news, I have to keep the pregnancy a secret, even from the friend or family member who referred them. I take client confidentiality quite seriously. So, sometimes it can get quite interesting keeping up with who knows what about whom. The story I’m about to tell is probably the most complicated set of secrets that I have ever had to keep track of all at one time. |

Well, my daughter, my apprentice and I just did a VERY long marathon birthing session. We had just two births, but they were back to back. As a result, we missed two full nights of sleep.
I got my first call on Friday afternoon from a client who is a first time mom. She ended up having a long and difficult labor. We tried more tricks to get her baby to come out but nothing worked.

When a woman thinks she is in labor and it turns out that she is not, I've never liked to call it a "false labor." I prefer to call it a "dress reshearsal" instead. Afterall, a dress rehearsal serves a purpose and can be beneficial. |

It still amazes me that even after delivering over 100 babies, that I can still get anxious when it comes to waiting for some babies. It never surprises me when a mother gets anxious near the end of her pregancy. That's just part of what happens to any mother in a normal pregnancy. But even as a midwife, I sometimes get anxious near the end of my clients' pregnancies. |
