Ever since the exciting observations of the human infant’s ability to crawl to his or her mother’s breast shortly after birth, latch on, and suckle all on its own, mothers and fathers have been entranced by this amazing feat.
To think that for many decades both caregivers and parents believed that in order to breastfeed, a baby would not know what to do to feed and was usually pushed onto the breast. The baby would just look and lick and often balk at the intrusion. Actually at birth the infant may know more than the mother. |

Our birth story is a precious one to us and we are delighted to share it with you. The object of our story is a precious little girl, Rebecca Elizabeth, who we proudly call Becky. We think it's a neat thing that she also shares the name of our midwife, Beth. For a little background to our story…For the first six months of our pregnancy, we saw a regular obstetrician. Our family has been friends with Beth and her family for years, but we still felt most comfortable with a medical doctor to oversee our delivery. In addition, we live many miles in the country quite far from medical help, so we didn't feel comfortable with our first birth in our home. We met with Beth and her assistants (including Susan, my husband's sister!) for lunch after our doctor's appointments each month and it didn't take long before we felt sure Beth knew more about our baby than the doctors did. After seeing a doctor(s) for those months and trying to convince them we really desired a natural birth, and Beth offering the use of her home (or office, if it was finished) for the birth, we decided to officially change. |

Yesterday was my husband’s birthday. We had planned only a simple celebration. We were going to attend church with our daughter Jessica and her family and then all meet at our house for a Sunday dinner. Larry is also a huge Dallas Cowboys fan, so he planned to watch Dallas play the New York Giants later in the afternoon.
I woke up early Sunday morning, and I had just put a roast in the oven when my apprentice Mercy called me with the news that her client Susan was in labor. We had made a trip to the valley just the day before for a false alarm with this same client. Usually when we get called out for false labor, we don’t get called back for at least a couple of days. So, I had figured that this meant Larry’s birthday celebration would not be interrupted this year. Larry had told me that he thought it would. I told him he was just being pessimistic, but he said he was just being realistic. As it turned out, Larry was right after all. I’m thankful that my husband takes these kinds of interruptions in stride. He is always flexible about when we celebrate family events. And that’s a good thing, since a midwife’s life is subject to such interruptions almost all the time. So when Larry heard what was going on, he just smiled and said, “I told you so.” |
